S’more Please {lovelies via pinterest}

Summer nights mean camp fires.  And camp fires mean S’mores, naturally.  I’m a fan of s’mores in all forms.  Put some graham, marshmallow & chocolate all together and I’m going to love it.  And probably won’t be able to stop eating it once I start.  We don’t have a fire pit so I decided to find a few recipes that I could make.  I’ve tried this first one and it is super good.  And I’m sure the other two from Love From The Oven just as yummy, too. They sure look amazing.

Biltmore Estates

A while ago Design Mom started a column on her blog about loving where you live.  I decided that’s a good idea.  In the past 4 years we have lived in 5 states and visited a few others.  We figured we would be in each place for a while and would have plenty of time to see things.  But we never got around to seeing more than the one or two main touristy things in the area.  So I’m going to join Design Mom in the quest of loving and learning about where I live and visit.

While Abbi and I were visiting their family, my sister and I decided to ditch the kids and take off on a road trip. The Biltmore Estate was our destination. We have this unhealthy fascination with touring homes.  I blame our dad.  If there was a new home being built or an open house near we always had to go walk through it. If there was a historic home near our vacation spot, we toured it.  We’ve been in historic mansions from California, to Massachusetts and even in Canada.  Our husbands don’t exactly share our zeal.  So it was the perfect opportunity for a girls trip!

The Estate is amazing you guys.  It’s a 1750,000 square foot mansion that was built by George Vanderbilt between 1889-1895 for his summer home.  He was single at the time, and even when he did get married they only had 1 child.  That is one mighty big place for 3 people.  I wish that they would have let me take pictures inside the home.  It was amazing.

But the grounds are equally as amazing.  If not even more so.  It was originally 125,000 acres and meant to be a totally self sustaining.  They had their own dairy, farms, everything.

4

To look at it now you would never know that it was almost completely empty of trees when Vanderbilt bought the land.  He brought in the landscape architect that designed Central Park in NYC to plan the estate grounds.  It was the first attempt at planned forestry.  It is totally amazing.

Have you ever visited Biltmore? Do you love old historic homes as much as I do?

Strawberry Fields in the Summer

A while ago Design Mom started a column on her blog about loving where you live.  I decided that’s a good idea.  In the past 4 years we have lived in 5 states and visited a few others.  We figured we would be in each place for a while and would have plenty of time to see things.  But we never got around to seeing more than the one or two main touristy things in the area.  So I’m going to join Design Mom in the quest of loving and learning about where I live and visit.

How loves strawberries?  K.  That was probably a dumb question, right?  Everyone loves strawberries.  They’re delicious.  You know what makes them even more delicious? When they’re warm from the sun and fresh off the vine.  While Abbi and I were visiting my sister and her family in North Carolina we hit up their neighborhood “you-pick” strawberry field.  It was the first time that we had ever picked our own produce and it was so fun (besides when I HAD to do it as a kid in our family garden.  when it was a chore it wasn’t near as fun)!

I’ve never really been one for painting my fingernails.  They always just end up all chipped and gross looking way too fast and I’m too change it up and fix it as often as I should.  But lately I’ve been giving it a try more often.  And Pinterest has some great inspiration, like always.

Rick Rack Owl {See Kate Sew pattern test}

Kate at See Kate Sew let me test another one of her patterns this last weekend.  She doesn’t tell you what the pattern is of until it appears in your inbox so it’s always a fun adventure :)  I was so excited when this little owl showed up!

Isn’t it adorable!?  I love the rick-rack tummy feathers the most.

Abbi feel instantly in love and wouldn’t let go of it all day.  I had to sneak it out of the house while she was napping to get the pictures taken.  That plan worked well until she woke up and noticed it gone.  After her melt down subsided I convinced her to come out and help me take a few more pictures.

It is such a big hit I might make a few more for the nieces & nephews for Christmas :)  You can pick up the pattern here if you’d like to make a few too.  Thanks again Kate for letting test out another one of your awesome patterns!

TCC Event {I wanna go real bad}

So there is this blogging event that I have wanted to attend for a very long time.  It’s called The Creative Connection and it’s geared to craft bloggers so it’s totally relevant to what I’m interested in!  And guess what?  This year they’ve teamed up with BlogHer and will be offering so many classes on how to open, run and grow a handmade business!

Every year they hold the TCC Event in St. Paul, Minnesota so I’ve never been able to attend since I’d need to pay for flight and hotel in addition to the conference price, but this year I’m living 15 minutes away from the Hotel where it is being held!  I have to go right!?

Well, the TCC Event is holding a giveaway on their blog right now for not one, but TWO passes to the conference.  They’re even throwing in the hotel!  That is basically the best giveaway I’ve ever heard of.  If I win it I’m going to make my Uber-Talented sister, Sue, with me.  I think she needs a good crafty vacation.

So run over to the TCC Event website to enter.  Maybe I’ll see you there?
