See Kate Sew Pattern Test {adorable!}

I had the most awesome opportunity to test a new pattern for Kate from See Kate Sew.  I totally love her aesthetic and everything she does so when I saw she was looking for testers I jumped on it.  Plus, I hadn’t pulled my sewing machine out of the closet for months and this was the perfect excuse :)

Introducing, the Pop-Up Pleats Camera Strap Cover!

Isn’t it so fun!  I love the box pleats.  They make it look like a super cool mandarin collar when you’re wearing it.

I was really intimidated by the box pleats at first since I have never tried them, but  they were really easy.  And Kate’spattern was super easy to follow.  It came together really fast, too (other than the part where I was an idiot and forgot to sew the two sides right sides together and had to unpick it all.  Un-picking on a knit is torture.  Believe me).

Guess what the best part is?  The back is made with a stretch knit so it won’t slide around on the strap.  How ingenious is that?

It’s so soft against your skin.  I totally love it.

K – now everybody run over to Kate’s blog and see how all the other testers did theirs and check out the pattern.  Ready…Go!

Our 4th of July {awesome weekend}

I don’t know about you, but we had a fantastic 4th of July weekend.  It started out with my amazing new hair cut and ended with a very tired little girl.

Sunday night our neighbors invited us over for a little dinner.  He made us the most AMAZING smoked brisket and pork ribs I’ve ever had.  It was sooo good!  I mean look at it!

And I just wanted to throw in this picture of Abbi that Brad took during dinner cuz I love it.  She’s so cute!

To end the weekend off we had some homemade cheesecake {super yum, but I forgot a picture of it} than we sat on the cars in our driveway and watched the fireworks they were shooting at our local high school.  We had a great view and the kids LOVED it.

All in all it was a great weekend!  What did you do for the 4th?

Hair Cut {i’m a pixie!}

A few months ago I wanted to get my hair cut so bad!  Not a trim, but a cut.  This is the style I was thinking about.

But I totally chickened out.  Then, on Friday night as I was looking through my google reader I can across this post.  It’s a guest post that Ellie G from Less Cake {more frosting} did for Hair Week over at I am Momma Hear Me Roar.  It’s all about short hair styles and I loved them all!

That night I dreamed of short hair cuts.  Everyone had them – even me – and I LOVED it!  The second I woke up I called my nearest salon and got the first appointment.  I was going to take advantage of the love I still had for my dream hair while I could.  I didn’t want to chicken out again.

I went in like this {I forgot to take a before picture, so here is the most recent picture I had of my hair down – we’re at the zoo}.  It’s the longest it’s been since I was 16!

Two hours later I walked out like this…

I just let the stylist do what she wanted.  She went darker {with blond and red peek-a-boo streaks in the front} and almost as short as I wanted. I think she got freaked out and thought I would hate her if she really went as short and I told her…like I didn’t know what I was thinking, but I totally love it!

Thanks Ellie G and Cheri for making me dream :)

Cucumber Raita {yummy steak topping}

I am a huge fan of the grill.  I would grill everyday during the summer if I could.  And when we grill steaks I have a very favorite thing to put on top – Cucumber Raita.  It is so yummy and so so easy!

I made it the other day and thought I would snap a few pictures to share along with the recipe.  It’s my first time trying to photograph food, so excuse the embarrassing total lack of styling :)

While the steaks are on the grill I just run into the kitchen and grab a few ingredients and mix them all together (this is not an exact science so most amounts are total approximations – I usually don’t even measure):

8 oz carton of plain greek yogurt
1/2 cup shredded or julienned cucumber – I leave the peel on
1 tsp chopped red onion
1/4 tsp sugar
Salt and pepper to taste

I think the original recipe had fresh mint in it too, but I found it just browsing through books at the library a few years ago and have no idea what book it was in so I can’t go back and check for sure.  I usually just leave it out, but I bet it would be good.

Once the steaks are done, just garnish with the raita!  So easy and it’s so fresh, light and summery.  I love it!

Countdown Chain {grandpa’s coming!}

What do you do when you have some really fun family coming to visit and a 3 year old that won’t stop asking when they’re going to get here? You make a countdown chain, that’s what!  I’m sure that ALL of you have made one before and know what you’re doing, but here’s how we went about it.

You take some colored paper, scissors, tape and a very excited little girl.

First, you cut the paper into strips,

then you tape them into a chain,

next, you hang it on your embarrassingly plain wall with a the thermostat smack in the middle of it.

Finally, you take the extra paper strips and make “She-Ra power arm bracelets” (Abbi is obsessed with She-Ra right now and immediately pointed out that She-Ra had bracelets just like them :) ).

Now you’re done! Just sit down and wait for Grandpa, Grandma and Emily get here!

An Eventful Weekend {appendicitis is lame}

This weekend I had some big plans.  We were going to finish putting all our boxes in the attic space above the garage, figure out how to do a gallery wall and hang up our pictures, get some blogs scheduled, all sorts of stuff.

Well, I was awoken at 5:30 on Friday morning to my husband asking me to take him to the ER.  The first thing that went through my groggy mind was that he was trying to get out of work :)  But that idea was quickly banished.  Brad has never taken a sick day since I’ve known him and I couldn’t see him starting now. And he was obviously really hurting.

So we took Abbi to the neighbors and headed to the hospital.  About 4 hours later I was sitting in a recovery room with an Appendix-less husband.  So much for getting anything done, but Abbi and I had a blast watching Aladdin with him.

He’s doing great now and even went back to work that Monday.  But you know what it reminded me of?  The Modern Family where Gloria thinks Jay is imagining his stomach pain then he ends up having his appendix removed. Want to know what’s weird?  We had just watched that episode the night before we went to the ER.  Crazy.

PS – I totally love that show :)
